about

JPS were the forerunners to Sphagnum Core with several founding members of JPS continuing on with Sphagnum Core.

Originally formed in 1979 by a bunch of 13 year olds, John Peters Sings were pretty much the only Tauranga alternative band in the early 80's. With their only live outlet being the Otumoetai College talent quests of early 80's and busking, their rare performances were anticipated mostly for their originality and stupidity - after all, people have always liked to laugh at other people making fools of themselves. Unfortunately these performances also made them widely reviled and hated, so their warped take on living in a backwater intolerant red-necked, provincial town in 1980's New Zealand remained largely ignored.... UNTIL NOW!

This best of album gathers songs from their many limited release albums and EP's into a coherent, mostly listenable package for the 1st time. Love them or hate them, you will have to admit that they were original for a bunch of 80's teenagers, and there was nothing else remotely like them going on in NZ (or possibly anywhere else in the world) at the time.

APOLOGIES FOR THE SOUND QUALITY OF SOME OF THESE TRACKS.
This was all recorded LONGGGGG before multi-track recorders were even remotely affordable or even obtainable for home recording. It was all done on a mono radio/tape recorder which deteriorated steadily from the years of abuse it got. In fact tracks 22-31 were done using primitive multi-tracking by bouncing tracks back and forth between 2 separate tape recorders. The shitty sound quality sort of adds something to the project though which was lucky, 'because no way were we gonna pay $50 an hour to record these at a proper studio!

about

Sphagnum Core Sydney, Australia

Radio jingles + indie rock

90% of this was written and recorded on the spot using a motley combination of decrepit instruments, drum machines and musicians.

The bands initial inspiration were the porn-video catalogues that kept arriving in our letterbox from Canberra each month - hence song titles like 'The Enema Marathon', and 'Teenage Sperm'.

Sydney via NZ and Melbourne.
